Bring It Home is a non-profit organization with a mission to provide food for students of the Montevideo School District, the MN Valley Area Learning Center, and the Southwest West Central Educational Learning Center who do not have adequate food to eat on the weekends or over an extended school vacation. A child who comes to school hungry is at a disadvantage when it comes to learning, causing them to fall behind. Bring It Home addresses this problem through a weekend food program (often known as a backpack program) where children bring home a bag of food to supplement their weekend meals. It is our hope these resources will support the health, behavior, and achievement of every student who participates.
Each weekly backpack contains at a minimum 2 breakfast items, 2 lunch items, 2 fruit/vegetable items, and 2 snack items. All food is provided to the children free of charge and all children are eligible for this program. We work closely with Second Harvest Heartland (a food bank) and Comprehensive Inventory Solutions (CIS) so that we can purchase food economically and stretch all dollars raised. To increase the nutritional value of the bags, we started including a milk coupon once a month. The coupon can be redeemed at the Montevideo Market for one gallon of Our Family 1% milk.
A student can be added to the program in one of the following ways:
1. Stop in the school office or counselor's office and request an enrollment form.
2. Email Bring It Home at [email protected] or call 320-226-1263.
The program packs an average of 120 backpacks each week over the course of the school year. Approximately 80 families are served by this program throughout the year. We are starting our 10th year of operation and the program is still going strong.
This program is run completely by volunteers and donations. If interested in volunteering, please contact Karen Kling at [email protected] or Deb Goebel at [email protected]. If you would like to make a donation to the program, send checks payable to Bring It Home, PO Box 163, Montevideo MN 56265. We are a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization under the auspices of Prairie Five Community Action Council. Any questions about the program can be directed to our email address.
